Issue with Super Chrome, black "splats"

Post by JBSL » Tue Aug 13, 2019 7:03 pm

Wondering if anyone has any idea of the attached issue. These are parts that were sandblasted and cleaned with DA. We did a batch prior to these and everything came out fine, but these have what appears to black fisheye/splats of some sort. Any thoughts? Funny thing though, only 2 of the 6 parts had the spots. The powder is new Super Chrome, from Prismatic.

Looks like something coming out of the metal. I know you said you blasted and wiped it, but it seems like some contaminant was in a void in the metal and only came out during the curing cycle. That happens a lot with hot rolled steel, galvanized, or galvaneel. I would also check to see if the pieces in question got re-contaminated before coating, like by blowing compressed air that may have had some oil in the lines or if the parts were around a diesel engine.

Fisheye hunts are the worst. Good luck!

That’s just a dirty part.

You need to stop applying so much powder ! That chrome should look like a mirror before applying clearcoat or candy top coats .

The cleaner degreaser you insist on using isn’t strong enough ! Save the wiping for your ass.

Keep doing what your doing and you won’t be in the finishing business much longer .

Wise is very correct and that chrome or any chrome + normal powders should be as slick and shinny as a piece of glass and the chrome should also come out looking almost like real chrome until you clear coat it and then it will be duller.

The spots do look like something coming out of the metal. Strip it back to bare metal and then try outgassing the two parts and them media blast them. If you want to spray DA after you have blown the parts off then go for it but I use Acetone and it dries really quick and I never wipe any blasted metal.

Also remember to fully cure chrome any way you can even if you have to leave it in the oven longer and if you don't then when you apply the clear then the chrome will look more grayish.
All I have said is said just for meanness so I don't have to argue with anyone!

These same parts were coated with primer first, then chrome. No issue with the primer finish at all, but the chrome did the same thing again. A real head scratcher for sure...

This is Not a head scratcher , you are applying the chrome to thick. Shoot some samples or do a mil thickness test with a gauge , your using waaaayyyy to much powder.

If that’s a bonded chrome, then the thick ass application you insist on using is causing it.
